Child’s Play: New Voice New Origin story

Share

Chucky has a new voice and a new origin story. Hi… I’m Chucky, Wanna play? This iconic 5 letter sentence put terror in the hearts on so many children back when the first Child’s play film was released. The film followed the atrocities of a doll that had been possessed by the soul of a dying occult murderer who goes on a murder spree.

The original franchise had about 7 films with the main character Chucky being voiced by Brad Douriff. However, after the 7 installment (Cult of Chucky) in 2017 the studio announced they were rebooting the series. On April 18th 2018 9rion Pictures released a bone-chilling future length trailer for the upcoming Child’s Play .

The first and probably the most important detail we noticed is that Brad Dourif won’t be returning as the voice of Chucky.  Mark Hamill (Star Wars) is the new voice of the murderous doll.

Director Lars Klevberg and screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith have also decided to go in a different direction with the origin of the Doll, a decision which could “trigger” a large number of Chucky fan boys/girls out there.  The Chucky we know and love has gotten a make-over.  He is now a state Buddi doll whose malfunctioning programming sends him on a murderous rampage. This faulty programming gives him ability to hack into smartphones, Bluetooth devices and cars.

The film makers are probably going with an origin story which would be more relatable to the younger generation. While it is possible for serial killer to posses your doll, I think a glitch in its programming is a more plausible scenario. But when has Hollywood writers ever gone for plausibility when penning a script.

What the producer had to say

Child’s Play remake producer Seth Graheme-Smith explained to Entertainment Weekly the decisions behind Chucky’s new look and origin: “We didn’t want to do something that felt too familiar to the Chucky that was so successful in the original series. We knew we wanted to reintroduce a new design because we’re also reintroducing a new concept for what Chucky really is. That led us to, okay, if a company like Apple or Google or Amazon was going to design and market a child companion toy, what would that toy look like? What would its features be? And that drove the design more than anything.
