Germany’s Bundesliga has delayed their said resumption date by a week; this is a request from the German government, will have to wait another week to find out about a possible restart date as the government has delayed a decision over resumption.
The league has been suspended for some time because of the global pandemic coronavirus.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said that any decision on if and when sports activities could resume would now be taken on Wednesday, which is on May 6.
“It is absolutely necessary that we remain disciplined and stick to health guidelines,” she said, the chancellor said.
The German Football League (DFL), which runs the Bundesliga, has warned that many top-division teams will be in an “existence-threatening” financial position if play does not resume by June and it was necessary they look at a possible early resumption.
The Bundesliga has just nine more games to finish the season, and Bayern Munich is leading the table with four points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. The DFL needs the season to be completed by June 30 because of deals with sponsors and broadcasters.
Players are already back in training, and last week the DFL said the league would be ready to return on May 9 – but 16 or 23 May are now considered more realistic dates.
Germany has banned large events with crowds until October 24, so games will be behind closed doors.
In Spain, La Liga is hoping of restart in mid-June behind closed doors, but in France, Paris St-Germain has been awarded the Ligue 1 title.
The Dutch top-flight was abandoned last week with no promotion or relegation and no champions, while in Belgium, clubs have postponed a vote on confirming the cancellation of their top-flight until next week.
