Some residents of the Kwali local government area of the Capital Territory, FCT, have confirmed that they received a stipend of 20,000 from the federal government to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.
While showing her appreciation, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Sarah Gadaga, who hails from Nasarawa State, said that the stipend would be of great help to her family of three and small business.
“I just received N20,000 from the federal government, under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.
Under the Conditional Cash Transport program, we are paid N5,000 per month. Since this year, we were unable to receive any stipend for reasons the ministry explained to us.
Everyevery.ng gathered that the N20,000 covers the months of January, February, March, and this April.
The Federal government on Wednesday said it had commenced distribution of N20,000 each to 190 families and beneficiaries in the Kwali local government area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The money was distributed through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, under the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq who confirmed this said that the CCT Programme has been ongoing in the last six years.
According to Farouq, President Muhammadu Buhari was determined to cater for the welfare of the less privileged, especially during this period of Coronavirus pandemic.
She said “We have about 5,000 households in the FCT enrolled in the CCT program, it is targeted at the poorest of the poor in Nigeria, whereby the government pays N5,000 stipend to the poorest of the poor in the country.
Farouq further said “The government has decided to pay N20,000 to the beneficiaries, which covers a period of four months; in order to relieve the economic pressure on them.
“The exercise will take place in all the states across the federation. We are starting with FCT, Lagos, and Ogun, the three states that are currently under lockdown because of the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria.
According to her, the stipend would go a long way to support the families of the beneficiaries in their daily lives, especially at this time of the Coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the world.
