Bayern Munich Humiliated Chelsea
Bayern Munich humbled Chelsea last night in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 which was played in Stanford Bridge. The Bundesliga leaders came all out yesternight and they were too good for the Blues to hold. Bayern Munich is the third team from Germany, after Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
Dortmund beat Paris Saint Garman (PSG) in their own first leg while RB Leipzig beat Tottenham Hotspur at the London stadium. Chelsea suffer yet another home defeat in the season, the visitors came prepared and it was shown in their last night game.
The first half of the game was played goalless with both teams looking good for the next 45 minutes of the game. The second half came with the visitors making most of the chances and just when Chelsea thought they have owned the day Bayern took over.
Former Arsenal Player Serge Gnabry opened up the scoring to his third coming to England. The 24-year-old who scored four goals in the Tottenham Hotspur demolition in the London Stadium found the back of the net six minutes into the second half. He used a well-placed through pass from Robert Lewandowski to open the scoring. Just three minutes later he doubled the lead from another pass from Lewandowsky again.
Robert Lewandowski rounded up the scoring in the 76th minute of the game. Bayern Munich heads home with a massive three point and three away goals advantage. It will take Chelsea a miracle to escape to the next stage of the UEFA Champions League. All three teams from the Bundesliga are at an advantagiuos side as they all won their matches with RB Leipzig and Brayan Munich winning their away games.
“The performance was poor and sometimes you have to be brutally honest. They outclassed us in every department and it’s quite sobering. The level of team they are is why they challenge in the Bundesliga and Europe year in year out. I’m disappointed we couldn’t do more against them. We have to take it on the chin and work towards getting back to the levels we want to be at.
“If you look at the choice of passes they make our choices have to improve. If our players have a bit about them, which I think they do, they will look at who they were playing against and the level they need to work to. We will always play with pride but I’m more concerned about the bigger picture. How quickly can we recover for the Premier League and how quickly can we get to the level?”
He also commented on the red card he said: “Jorginho is done by talking to the ref, which is unnecessary when you’re on a yellow card. Marcos Alonso I haven’t seen yet and I will look at it, but they are out of the game so it’s an opportunity for someone else to come in.”
Chelsea now prepares for their next game which is against Bournemouth on Saturday, 29 February while Bayern travel to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga the same day. The return leg will be on the 18th of March and it will be played in the home of the German champions.
