Atletico Madrid Makes Final Spot in UCL Last Game

Atletico Madrid secured a place in the last 16 of the Champions League after beating Portuguese side F.C Porto in a great game in which three-player were given red cards. Antoine Griezmann scored one goal in Portugal and had a vital role in the two others. Atletico Madrid finished second in Group B behind Liverpool, who thrashed AC Milan in Italy.

Atletico led 1-0 through Griezmann when Yannick Carrasco was sent off before Porto’s Wendell saw red. Things became worse for the home side after another player was shown a red card. Agustin Marchesin, who was not on the pitch, was also red. Substitute Angel Correa made it 2-0 to Atletico in the 90th minute, while Rodrigo de Paul added a third goal after 60 seconds of the second goal.

F.C Porto then earned a consolation penalty, which Sergio Oliveira converted with the game’s final kick. Diego Simeone’s Atletico began the game bottom of the group but ended it second on seven points, Porto coming third with five and qualifying for the Europa League. English Premier League top side Liverpool finished top with 18 points as they won all their group stage games. 

Speaking about the match after the game, Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann said: “This match and this group stage campaign sums up just what Atletico is all about. We are a dedicated group, and we need everyone to do their bit to get to where we want to. We never stop believing.”
