ASUU to Sanction FUTO Over ‘Illegal’ Pantami’s Professorship

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a sanction on the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, over the promotion of Dr Isa Ali Pantami to the level of a professor.

Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy was controversially promoted to a professor, a move which was widely criticized by ASUU.

ASUU Wants Pantami Sanctioned

The union has now made a move to sanction the institution involved and revoke the minister of the post they termed “Illegal.”

This was made known in a press conference with its National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke held in Lagos on Monday.

The minister made it known that it is impossible to be a minister and a lecturer at the same time, describing the promotion as encouraging illegality.

He said, “You cannot be a minister and a lecturer in a university. It is an encouragement of illegality.

“Pantami has to quit as a minister and be tried for doing double jobs within the same federal system. He is not qualified. Pantami should not be treated as a professor.

“We have resolved to sanction ASUU members involved in his promotion and the VC of FUTO.”
