The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has announced a new condition for the resumption of academic activities in Nigerian Universities
According to members of the union, physical contact with their students on campuses is possible only if there is strict compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols.
Reacting to calls for resumption of academic activities in the Universities, ASUU leaders expressed readiness to resume academic activities.
ASUU Chairman, the University of Ilorin Chapter, Prof. Moyosore Ajao said what the university management had done was to start online teaching since their industrial action was called off last month.
Ajao stated that the National Universities Commission, NUC had earlier emphasized the need to comply with the mandate of the Presidential Task Force, PTF on COVID-19 by adhering to safety protocols.
Also, the ASUU Chairman, the University of Ibadan Chapter, Prof. Ayo Akinwole said members of the union in the University were prepared to work.
However, he stressed the need for adherence to safety protocols on the prevention and management of COVID-19 as stipulated by the PTF on the disease.
He further advised the management of each university to assess the situation on their own campus and provide all necessary things for the well-being of both lecturers and students.
Reacting, ASUU Chairman, the University of Lagos Chapter, Dr. Dele Ashiru said members of the union had been waiting on the government and university management to do the needful for a safe reopening of universities.
