“Anthony Joshua’s opponent Andy Ruiz scares me”. A statement made by Eddie Hearn. Eddie revealed that Anthony Joshua’s fight with Andy Ruiz Jr on the first of June will be a “new test” for the heavyweight champion. Anthony Joshua makes his American debut on June 1 against Ruiz. A fight which was scheduled after the proposed fight with Jarrell Miller was cancelled. Due to Miller’s inability to pass a string of drugs tests. Joshua was determined to ensure the fight still went ahead as planned. But Miller was denied a boxing licence from the New York State Athletic Commission,
Moving-on, Matchroom Sports and Hearn immediately put the feelers out for a potential replacement. And Hearn eventually offered the fight to Ruiz. In Hearn’s word through Boxrec; “I’m a little bit scared. And I want to be scared. This is a new test for Anthony Joshua and now he has to fight a guy with a big set of cojones who will let his hands go, and show his entire heart. The fighters who talked about stepping up, my first thought was, ‘Who is it going to be?’
My concern was to make a real fight on June 1. I’m a fan. I didn’t want to bring Anthony Joshua to Madison Square Garden knowing we can’t lose.”
Hearn also revealed that A couple guys reached out, but when he heard from [Ruiz]. He knew the guy really wants it. Ruiz thinks he can win. This is a tough fight. This kid can fight. This guy has Mexico behind him. And “If he wins this fight, he’ll be a national hero.” This is a no-brainer, he concluded.
Ruiz is on the verge of becoming the first Mexican heavyweight world champion in history should he win the fight. And Hearn believes that this will be an added incentive for the underdog.
The fight was initially offered to Luis Ortiz. After a force withdrawal by disgraced fighter Miller. But Cuban’s “Luis Ortiz” demanded too much money for a deal to be made. And the situation paved way for the 29-year-old Ruiz. Ruiz was given the shot, and Hearn believes that he poses a real threat to Joshua.
Nevertheless, Madison Square Garden on June 1 will be graced with lots of British fans. Americans, African, Mexicans and the sport (Boxing) loving fans all over the world. Ruiz has the chance to become the first Mexican heavyweight champion. And that’s an opportunity that may never happen again. The fight will be a blockbuster when it starts. And a lot will definitely be a stake.
