Cameroon and Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana has been handed a one year ban for the failed dope test. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon goalkeeper was given the ban by Uefa after a result of a dope test he did last year finally came out, he did the test in October.
According to reports the suspension will start from today 5th of February, and will apply to all football activities at both club and national level. The test result first showed Furosemide in his urine but Ajax claim he took it “unwittingly” after feeling sick.
According to a report from Ajax, it says on the morning of 30th of October Andre Onana did not feel well. He wanted to take a tablet. Unwittingly, he took Lasimac, a drug that his wife had previously been prescribed.
Ajax also said they would appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The club said Andre Onana made a mistake with the product and mistakenly took his wife’s medicine, which ultimately led to UEFA’s action against the goalkeeper.
The football association’s disciplinary body ruled that he did not intend to cheat. But on the other hand, the European Football Association believes that, following the law of the anti-doping rules, an athlete has a duty at all times to ensure that no prohibited substances enter his or her body which he failed to comply with.
Ajax’s managing director Edwin van der Sar said they explicitly go against performance-enhancing drugs; he said they stand for a clean sport. This is a terrible setback not just for Andre Onana but the whole team.
Andre Onana is a top goalkeeper who has proven himself with Ajax and other clubs he played for before joining Ajax. The club is hoping the ban be shortened before he is a big plus to the team and him leaving now will really bring the team down.
