Almost twenty-three years after the death of General Sani Abacha, the Chief Security Officer to the former Head of state, Hamza Al-Mustapha, has revealed the reason behind his death.
Al-Mustapha dismissed insinuations that Abacha died after eating an apple from his concubines. He reiterated that the speculations that Abacha died on women or from poisoned apple were wicked lies.
He added that the sudden collapse of the former Head of State started after one of the security personnel, who accompanied President Yasser Arafat of Palestine, shook hands with him at the Abuja International Airport.
The former CSO said he noticed the change in the countenance of Abacha and informed the Aide-de-Camp, Lt. Col. Abdallah, who advised that they should keep a close watch on him.
He further disclosed that Abacha was already gasping for breath when he got to his bedside and later called the Head of State’s physician, Dr Wali, who arrived in the place.
According to Al-Mustapha, the situation became charged when one of the Service Chiefs, Lieutenant General Ishaya Rizi Bamaiyi, suggested he be made the new Head of State after being informed of the death of Abacha.
However, he opined that there were indications that General Jeremiah Useni, who was the last man with the late Head of State, might have poisoned him.
