Ajegunle to the World: The Art of Exporting the Streets

Share

Have you danced Zanku (or attempted to) recently? What about Shaku Shaku? Shoki too? No matter how bougie you consider yourself to be, if you grew up in Nigeria during the early 2000s it means only one thing in this context: you danced or at the very least were familiar with the Galala and Suo dance steps. You were also aware of the propagators of the dance, Daddy Showkey and his ilk that is.

Similarly, if you are a fan of football, or at the very least, a patriotic Nigerian, you must recognize such names as Taribo West, Samson Siasia, Emmanuel Amunike, and more recently, Odion Ighalo. Comedians such as Basketmouth also have their roots in Ajegunle.

What might have escaped you is the fact that these sounds, moves, and athletes originate from the ‘streets’ and go on to become regional or international sensations.

Ajegunle is Nigeria’s most popular slum located in Lagos. Above anything else, Ajegunle is a symbol of Nigeria’s dogged determination to transcend economic woes and restrictions to shine internationally through talent and sheer hard work. AJ City is just a metaphor for Bariga, Ketu, Agege and many other slums across the country. It is home to people of different ethnic groups of Nigeria most of whom are Yoruba, Igbo, and Ijaw.

AJEGUNLE TO THE WORLD is an event organized by LSD Entertainment to showcase past and present talent out of Ajegunle, as well as celebrating past achievement while inspiring future ones. It features artists such as Daddy Showkey, Oritsefemi, Reminisce, Flekta man, Chuddy K, Terry Apala, LAX, Solidstar, Dprince, Kcee, Daddy Showkey, Oritsefemi, African china, Daddy fresh, Danfo Drivers among many other musical talents.

It is a project that is beyond just showcasing talents of the old and new but also to expose to people all over the country, the distinguished multifarious culture, ethnicity and people of Ajegunle that has played a major role in the development of the entertainment industry from music, football, comedy, and films.

An Ajegunle to the World concert is coming to Abuja sooner than you think. It is scheduled to hold at Transcorp Hilton, Maitama, on the 11th of August. Tickets are available online and at the venue.
