Residents of Abuja are being encouraged to pay closer attention to their sexual health as health authorities continue efforts to address the HIV situation in the Federal Capital Territory

The FCT has continued to record an HIV burden above the national average, according to officials. In May 2026, the FCT Administration launched a ₦41.2 billion HIV and AIDS strategic plan aimed at reducing new infections and improving access to treatment and prevention services.

The development has renewed calls for people to know their HIV status rather than wait until they notice symptoms. Health experts say testing is important because a person can have HIV without showing obvious signs.

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) also advises people to get tested because testing is the only reliable way to know their HIV status.

For people who may have recently had unprotected sex or believe they may have been exposed to HIV, getting medical advice quickly is especially important. Prevention options, including PrEP, are available for people who may be at risk, while PEP can be used after a possible exposure when started within the recommended time. Nigeria has also expanded access to HIV prevention services, including newer long-acting prevention options.

Health officials continue to stress that knowing your status early makes it easier to access appropriate care and take steps to protect your health

Rather than relying on rumours or assumptions, residents are encouraged to visit a health facility and get tested.
