The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been granted approval to seize the properties of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari.
Kyari has been on trial after being linked with a drug baron cut across three countries.
The NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the development and said that it was standard practice to freeze the bank accounts of any accused persons.
Babafemi further confirmed that the approval was given by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
This simply means that all assets belonging to Abba Kyari and his co-accused will be frozen until they prove their innocence.
Abba Kyari’s Properties to be Confiscated
A senior justice ministry official who also spoke on the development confirmed that the Attorney-General endorsed the request by the NDLEA seeking the confiscation of Abba Kyari’s properties and that of the other police officers involved in drug dealing.
Kyari and four other officers, ACP Sunday Ubua, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba and John Nuhu were arraigned on March 7 on eight counts of conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in cocaine, and other related offences before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
A total sum of N4.2bn was traced to the bank accounts of Kyari and his co-accused, ACP Sunday Ubua.
