If you need to be in Kogi State for the next gubernatorial election, or you just want to go on vacation, then you are assured of having a great time in the ‘Confluence state’.
The state has a very great significance as a territory in Nigeria. It’s capital, Lokoja, is the first administrative capital of modern-day Nigeria. The name ‘Nigeria’ was coined in the area by Lady Flora Shaw, the wife of the governor of the Northern Protectorate, Lord Frederick Lugard.
Kogi state is about two hours’ drive from the nation’s seat of government, FCT Abuja. The confluence of River Niger and River Benue located in the state gives its ‘Confluence state’ nickname.
There are several other historic and exciting places in the state which has 21 Local Government Areas. They include Adani, Ajaokuta, Ankpa, Bassa, Dekwia, Ibaji, Idah, Igalamela-Odolu, Ijumu, Kabba/Bunu, and Koton Karfe. Others are Lokoja, Mopa-Muro, Ofu, Ogoni/Magongo, Okehi, Olamaboro, Omala, Yagba East, and Yagaba West.

Kogi state connects the Federal Capital Territory with 22 southern states making it very easy to access by visitors and tourists. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja is the destination for air travelers from and to Kogi state.
You need your camera to capture the historic places in the state. Also, make sure you have writing materials. You will need them to write about the people of Kogi and their communities.
The Ohinoyi Palace
You could make a royal visit the first touch in your visit. One of the many tribes in the state is the Ebira tribe ruled by the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland. The palace of the ruler is an exciting and historic place to visit. The white architectural masterpiece is one of the most beautiful palaces in West Africa. The palace, which is home to the present Ohinoyi Ado Ibrahim, is an elegant palace which is a sight to behold. You just need to be there to see and capture the beautiful edifice.
The Lord Lugard’s Residence and Office
Lord Lugard’s Residence and Office located at New Layout, GRA, Lokoja in Kogi State is an important place to visit. The residence was built in 1901 and was the home and office of the governor of the Northern Protectorate Lord Lugard.
The structure has since been made the Kogi State Government House when the state was created in 1991. The white building with columns and rocks still retain its structure till today but with minor renovations to reflect the modern times. You just have to visit Kogi to see the apex powerhouse of Kogi State in your visit.
The Lokoja Confluence
You have not been to Kogi state if you have not visited the Lokoja Confluence located at Beach Road, Kogi. The point at which two of Nigeria’s greatest river, River Niger and River Benue meet is located in the region. The amazing Y-shape seen on the Nigerian map could viewed on Mount Patti in the state. It was at this location that the Lady Flora Shaw had the idea to name the country Nigeria after the River Niger.
Other top places of interest in the state include Lord Lugard’s Rest House, Kogi State University (KSU) Anyigba, Confluence Stadium Lokoja, Ogidi town, and so on.
