The state is known for Commerce, one of the top commercial places in the state is the Kurmi market. It is known as the oldest market in Nigeria and one of the oldest in Africa. The market was established about 400 years ago by Emir Muhammadu Rumfa to promote the Trans-Sahara trade. It is a very big market with a lot of alleys to connect with traders. Foodstuff, pottery, leather products, ancient pieces of jewelry, calabash, and brass works are sold in the market.
Another ancient place to visit in Kano State is the City wall. This is the Nigerian version of the Great Wall of China, even though it is not as magnificent as the latter. This is one of the oldest and most intricate parts of the city. The wall was built over 600 years ago. The wall, which stands 18 meters high, serves as a protection for the city during its wars.
You could learn about the rich history of the state by visiting the Gidan Makama Museum. It was formerly the home of the Emir. The artifacts on display around the museum tell the story of Kano from the pre-colonial era and the city’s transition into modern times. The different sections of the Museum hold different kinds of Nigerian arts and crafts.
One of the most beautiful architectural edifices in the state is the Emir of Kano’s Palace. The Emir’s palace is a pointer to the Emirates with its beautiful designs. You have not really been to Kano if you haven’t seen the residence of Emir Sanusi Lamido.
Kano State is a place of learning. If you’re looking for a place to study, then you are highly welcome to Kano. The state has five universities. These include Bayero University Kano (BUK), Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST), Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano (YUSMUK), and Skyline University of Nigeria (SUN).
