Ekiti State is one of the states in the Southwest region of Nigeria. ‘The Fountain of Knowledge,’ which is the state’s nickname is a place to be if you really seek knowledge. The Nigerian state of Professors (Ekiti has more professors than any other state) is a place to be, with its friendly and homely environment. The state was carved out of the old Ondo state. Akure is, therefore, the closest city to Ekiti. There are 16 Local Government Areas in Ekiti. There are at least two important sites to visit. The state’s capital is Ado-Ekiti. Get ready to be served a dish of pounded yam, bush meats, and palm wine on your visit to the state.
The state is bounded by Ondo, Osun, and Kwara State. It can, therefore, be accessed by the major roads linking it to the state. Tourists and travelers coming to the state through the air route have Akure Airport as their destination.
It will be a good gesture to visit the Palace of the number one monarch in the state, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti. The Ewi’s Palace is an epitome of an architectural edifice and offers a big opportunity for you to learn more about the cultural heritage of Ekiti people. The palace stands in the same capital.
One of the top tourist sites in Nigeria is located at Ikogosi, Ekiti West LGA. Ikogosi Warm Spring is a confluence of hot spring and cold spring, meeting at a point and then flowing down as a single stream. This site is ever busy with tourists from all over the country. Make sure you come along with changing clothes as the water from the spring will treat you with some wetness.
One of the most visited places in the state capital for fun lovers, tourists, etc. is the Fajuyi Memorial Park. The park is in memorial of Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, a son of the land who was killed with General Aguiyi Ironsi, former Head of State, in a military coup in 1966. The colonel’s statue stands in the memorial park which is located in the state’s capital, Ado-Ekiti. People visit here for relaxation and picnicking.
Ekiti state is a hilly area with hills such as Olosunla Hills and Orole Hills. They are both in Ikere-Ekiti, which is about 30 minutes drive from the nearest airport. They are a perfect place for sightseeing, picnicking, and mountaineering. Myth has it that the Orole Hills was formerly a woman who was worshipped and is still worshipped as a goddess of prosperity in the town.
The state has several institutions of learning if you are visiting to acquire knowledge. The state is known for this. The higher institutions here are Ekiti State University (EKSU) Ado-Ekiti, Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) among others. Other important sites here are Erin Ayomigba Sacred Fish River, Osun River Source, Esa Cave, Ero Dam and Lake, Ipole-Iloro Waterfall, and so on.
