9 Nigerian Celebrities Who Lost Their Child

A famous quote by Kanye West read, “nothing in life is promised except death,” however, the death of a loved one, especially a child, is one of the cruellest tragedies to happen to anyone.

Baring the news of the loss of the son of one of Nigeria’s famous musicians, we take a look at the Nigerian celebrities, who have in the past, lost their child to the cold hands of death.

Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva

In a 2018 interview with Kemi Ashefon, veteran actress Joke Silva, wife to another veteran, Olu Jacobs, revealed that she lost her firstborn, Dayo Jacobs, at the age of ten.

Joke Silva revealed that her daughter had been in a coma for several months over an undisclosed illness but had to take her off the machine because there was no sign of improvement.

Remilekun Oshodi

Nollywood Yoruba actress, Remilekun Oshodi, popularly known as Remi Surutu, lost her first daughter, Ayo Oshodi, on 2nd July 2017.

16-year-old Ayo was said to have been battling with Sickle Cell Anaemia until her demise which was announced by fellow actor, Yomi Fabiyi.

Mr Ibu

Veteran Nollywood actor, John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, mourned his 2-year-old son, Emmanuel Mandela, in 2012.

Emmanuel was reported to have died of liver inflammation, though, Mr Ibu blamed the negligence of the hospital as the cause of his son’s death.

Aisha Falode

Popular Nigeria sports journalist and President of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Aisha Falode, made the headlines in 2014 after the tragic death of her 19-year-old son.

Toba Falode, a student of the SAE institute, Dubai, was reported to have been pushed from the 17th floor of Manchester Towers, Dubai Marina, where he resided, an allegation the police called an accident.

Aisha Falode, in her call for justice, stated that a Saudi national named Faisal Aldakmary Al-Nasser and his British girlfriend murdered her son. 

Eucharia-Anunobi Ekwu

In August 2017, popular Nigerian actress turned pastor Eucharia Anunobi lost her only son, Raymond Ekwu, due to complications from sickle cell anaemia.

The 57-year-old cleric stated that Raymond was mistakingly killed by his doctor, however, did not state how and why it was so.

Iya Rainbow

Another veteran actress, Idowu Philips, known by her professional name, Iya Rainbow, lost her daughter, Sola Osborne at the age of 46.

On January 14, 2016, Sola died due to complications from an ulcer aggravated by frequent marathon fasting.

Ada Ameh

Aladi God gift, the daughter of late Nollywood actress, Ada Ameh, could not survive complications from a brain tumour surgery in October 2020.

Ada Ameh did not get over the death of her only child, as she went into depression before her death in July 2022.

D’Banj

Nigerian singer, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’Banj, lost his son, Daniel Oyebanjo III in June 2018. 

The 13-month-old boy reportedly drowned in their Ikoyi home in Lagos during the visit of some friends of the family.

D’banj was said to be away for a musical award in Los Angeles, United States when the incident happened.

Davido

In another tragic news on Monday, famous Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, also known as Davido, lost his 3-year-old son, Ifeanyi Adeleke.

Ifeanyi was reported to have drowned in a swimming pool at their Banana Island home while in care of a Nanny.

Davido and Chioma were out of the state at the time of the incident and were inconsolable after hearing the news.
