6 Suspects Attempting to Assassinate Madagascar President Arrested

In Madagascar, Six people have been arrested, including one foreign citizen, for planning to assassinate their President, Andry Rajoelina.

Attorney General Berthine Razafiarivony reported today that the arrests took place on Tuesday after a lengthy investigation into an attack on state security.

Although no official confirmation on the nationality of the foreign suspects, the attorney general said the plot to assassinate the president also included the “killing and neutralisation” of senior political figures.

In his statement, he stated that evidence in their possession shows the individuals devised a plan to eliminate and neutralise the head of state, including other political figures.

Following the arrest of the suspects, There is no report on the details on the extent of the plot.

The public security minister also reported that the six people arrested include one foreign citizen, two dual nationals, and three Madagascans.

The minister said they had information for several months now, but they only just had an opportunity to make the arrest.

When it comes to political violence, Madagascar has a history.

President Andry Rajoelina was sworn in as president in 2019 after a hard-fought election and a constitutional court challenge from his rival.
