A forty-year-old man who auctioned two of his daughters out for the sum of seven hundred thousand naira has been arrested.
Mr Elisha Effiong, the suspect, was nabbed in the act by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC while making a move to monetise the value of his two daughters.
The Akwa Ibom resident’s case was revealed in the state capital Uyo today by Mr Ukeme Umana, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, PRO.
It was gathered that Umana revealed that the suspect was apprehended following a tip-off by a private guard operative at Full Care Hospital on Ekpanya Street, Uyo, that the suspect was trying to sell his two children, aged four and six years.
“The suspect who resides, according to him, in Adidikim in Cameroun confessed that the decision to sell the children was taken by him and his wife, who is still in Cameroun and was borne out of extreme hardship,” Umana said.
For further action, the case will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.
