The 2023 general election, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, would soon be provided with the guidelines in the space of ten months.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made this known when he welcomed a delegation from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in Abuja and informed the guest that the regulations and guidelines would be set almost a year before the election date.
He pointed out that proper voting will start in February 2022, which is an indication that the electoral commission plans to release the guidelines before the end of April.
The commission’s chairman recalled that in 2019, the commission was constrained by time due to the uncertainty that trailed the electoral legal framework.
“But we hope that this time around we will sign off on the regulations and guidelines at least 10 months before the next 2023election, which is very good progress for us.”
Speaking further on the commission’s source of power to develop the guidelines and regulations, the Mahmood said the commission was happy with the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari the Electoral Bill.
