The National Assembly has revealed the reason for rejecting Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as one of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Commissioner.
Before the rejection, Onochie’s nomination has been greeted with criticism from different quarters, with some Nigerians stating that she is partisan and should be disqualified.
Meanwhile, the Senate has explained why the upper Chamber rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, the Personal assistant to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, on social media.
According to the National Assembly, Onochie was rejected because of her partisanship and breach of the federal character principle. Many Nigerians had expressed concerns over Onochie’s involvement in politics and alleged membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Ezrel Tabiowo, the Special Assistant to President of the Senate, disclosed that the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya confirmed that the Committee received several petitions against the nomination of Onochie.
Gaya said her nomination violated the Federal Character Principle, noting that there is already a serving National Electoral Commissioner from Delta State, Barr. Mary Agbamuche-Mbu.
According to Gaya, the Committee bound by Federal Character Principle refused to recommend Onochie for confirmation.
Meanwhile, the Senate confirmed the nomination of Professor Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, Prof. Muhammad Sani Kallah and Prof. Kunle Cornelius Ajayi.
Others are Dr Baba Bila and Saidu Babura Ahmad. EveryEvery.ng gathered that the Senate recommended that the confirmation of Prof. Sani Muhammad Adam be stepped down.
