Coronavirus In Nigeria
The first Coronavirus in Nigeria has been detected. The deadly Coronavirus also known as Covid-19 has been unfortunately confirmed in Lagos State, Nigeria which is the first case in Sub- Saharan Africa. The dreaded Coronavirus was first discovered in Wuhan China and possessed almost the same distinguishing features as the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS) virus. The virus was initially common to animals but has now extended to humans.
The SARS, at first, was, however, detected in 2002 and recorded around 8,000 cases in 33 countries within eight months, resulting in the death of 1 out of every ten people reported with such matters. The Coronavirus, on the other hand, in the first month of its emergence, has recorded over 10,000 cases in China alone and is continuously extending to other parts of the world. Although, in the case of COVID-19, the early research so far on COVID-19 has proven that it is less deadly than the SARS Coronavirus.
Osagie Ehanire said the first COVID-19 in Nigeria has been detected in Lagos. The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire made this known in tweet which has now gone viral on the social media platforms. The victim is said to be an Italian citizen who owns a restaurant in Nigeria and works in Nigeria too.Report has it that the victim returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on the 25th of February 2020.
In his tweet on the first case of coronavirus in Nigeria, he added that “The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.”
It would be recalled that two cases had surfaced across all of Africa – in Egypt and in Algeria.
The World Health Organisation, (WHO) before the emergence of the COVID-19 in Nigeria, had warned that African health systems were not well equipped to respond to the deadly coronavirus outbreak should cases start to proliferate on the continent.
Nigerians take caution now.
